More Than Ice Cream. A Maine Family Tradition.

A Humble Beginning

For over four decades, Shain’s of Maine has been a favorite for families, travelers, and locals alike. What began as a small roadside stand has grown into a Sanford staple, known for homemade ice cream and classic lobster rolls.

In the 1960s, Rodney and Barbara Shain moved their family to Sanford, Maine and purchased a small farm. As their summer garden produced more than they could use, they set up a simple roadside stand, marking the beginning of Shain’s.

Growing Into A Local Favorite

In 1980, the family expanded into ice cream with a small seasonal shop in Sanford. As it grew, a Main Street location followed, and by 1984, everything came together under one roof, forming Shain’s Family Restaurant, built on comfort, friendliness, and community.

Today, Shain’s continues that same tradition. Simple, quality food, genuine hospitality, and a place where generations come together, just like family.
